2008 Newsletter

From President, Chris Noll
The weather is starting to warm up, so we’re all looking forward to a nice spring to lead into the outdoor tennis season.
Welcome to Mark as Vice President, Tennis and Jane as Treasurer. Special thanks to Tim Alles and Stacy Kasse for serving on the Executive Committee.
At the 2007 Annual Meeting it was decided to utilize a portion of the club’s reserve fund to totally reconstruct Courts 5, 6 and 7. These courts continue to have drainage problems causing excessive down time after watering and non-optimum playing conditions. The courts were reconstructed over the winter and are ready to play. They may be a little soft for several months as they compact due to play. Be patient, it will be worth it. Also new for this year are two shoe (water blaster) cleaners, one by each gate leading to the courts, a new clubhouse door, new keys and additional brushes and sweepers. Please make sure your key works. If not, contact one of the Executives.
A new shed, fencing and an ice machine were added in 2007.
Membership remains steady and the dues have been kept at the same level for a number of years. The club remains financially stable due to the hard work of all the volunteers. The tournaments and leagues were a success in 2007 and that should continue in 2008.
There are a number of socials scheduled for this year including the opening party, men’s night, ladies’ night, pizza night and the return of the year end annual party on September 20th. Also, the Moorestown Field Club has asked us to have a tennis social with them. The first one will be at Moorestown. Look for details at the clubhouse and on the web site.
The club is very excited to welcome Carol MacLennan back for third year as Club Pro. As you know, Carol is very enthusiastic and dedicated and the clinics and lesson went smoothly last year. Carol has helped with the social events and tournaments and will continue to improve the Junior program.
See you on the courts!
Chris Noll, President

WOMENS & MENS LEAGUES
Since the early 1900’s the HFC has participated in the Women’s Inter-Club Assoc. of Philadelphia. To play on these teams, one must be a member of the club and the USTA. We currently have two women’s spring teams – one on Mondays and one on Wednesdays. Matches against Philadelphia area and South Jersey teams run from late April to early June. There are also two women’s summer teams which are not USTA sanctioned. For more information contact our Club Coordinator, Anne Maxwell, or one of the spring team captains, Helene Delaney and Anne Maxwell or summer captains, Shelly Goldberg and Gail Dwyer. Remember, even if you have no team experience, consider being a sub – it’s a great way to get involved even if you can’t make the weekly commitment.
There will be one Men’s Senior league team (age 50+) this spring which will play on Thursday evenings. Contact Chris Noll for details.
Home match dates will also be posted on the website and at the club. The executive committee asks that club members have courts swept and ready for teams by 10am for spring matches and 9:30am for summer matches.
HOUSE AND GROUNDS REPORT
by Bob LaMaina
At last spring is here and our great club is opening.
House and Grounds has been busy helping to make our club the best and nicest in the area. There are BRAND NEW COURTS on #s 5, 6 & 7. I hope you will enjoy them and they last 20 to 30 years. It was a big undertaking, but I think well worth the time and money. These courts should dry faster and play truer, BUT please be patient. At first, like all new courts, they may play soft, but with proper rolling etc. they should play great!

You will also notice a brand new front and screen door. You should have received new keys to use on this door and the front gate lock. No more excuses for not locking up!

Also you will see new nets, brushes, line sweepers, tennis shoe washers and many other things to help make our club nicer. The tennis shoe washer will help keep our clubhouse cleaner and also your car and home. It really does a nice job removing har-tru.

Finally, if you have any comments or suggestions, please ask anyone on House or Grounds or myself .

Thank you and I hope to see everyone on the courts.

InterNet Info
Our efficient and technology-savvy treasurer, Jane Berkowitz, is using her expertise to organize and streamline her job. Many members received their 2008 bills via email this year which saved postage, paper and time. If you received your bill by ‘snail mail’, but would like to receive it email in the future, please provide Jane with your email address. Likewise – if you prefer not to receive them by email, let her know that also. Contact Jane at: jelkberk@comcast.net or 856-428-1755.
Be sure to check out the Club’s website at: www.haddonfieldclub.com. Sign up your email address to receive official HFC news with information and notices about the Club and upcoming events.
STRING THINGS
Rob Courtney of Cherry Hill Health & Racquet Club will be offering a pick up and drop off service for HFC members to handle your racquet and stringing needs. You can call Rob at: 856-429-2004 to arrange your racquet pick up, or give your racquet to Carol MacLennan to take to The Tennis Company. Rob can also answer any questions regarding strings and string tension.

Court Sign-Up
Remember: ALL players must be present before you sign up on the board for a court – please include players’ names not just initials.
If you are the last person leaving the Club, please be sure to lock the Clubhouse doors and the main gate. New keys issued to members this year fit the front gate, clubhouse doors and kitchen. Don’t forget to double check that the locker rooms are empty so you don’t lock someone in (yes, that has happened!).
Tournaments
Even if you are not participating in these tournaments, mark your calendars for the following dates and come out to watch some great tennis! Help is always needed during tournament weeks – brushing courts, preparing food for players, etc. Please consider lending a hand and sharing some hospitality with visitors – a little help goes a long way to make things run smoothly.

Club Tournaments
Annual Club tournaments start in June - Divisions include: Mixed Doubles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Gut Buster Singles. Watch for sign up sheets in the clubhouse. Contact Mark Forrester for details.
Planes, Trains & Cell Phones….
We’ve learned to live with planes and trains at the Club, but there is one form of noise pollution we can still control. Cell phones are great (How did we ever live without them?) but very distracting while driving, watching a movie and most certainly while playing tennis. How many times have you heard a muffled ring in a tennis bag only to have everyone within earshot run to check their phone? Be courteous to those around you by either silencing or turning off cell phones while on the court.

ATTENTION JUNIOR MEMBERS
If you are part of a family membership, or have just a junior membership, the Field Club would like to put together a directory for you. Please e-mail Jane Berkowitz, Treasurer, at jelkberk@comcast.net with the names of children and their birthdates and she will compile a directory with junior member contact information and ages. This directory will be e-mailed to those contributing.
UPDATED DIRECTORIES
Attached with this newsletter is a membership list that most likely will be obsolete by the time it reaches your mailbox. If you would like to receive updated lists via e-mail, please contact Jane Berkowitz, Treasurer at jelkberk@comcast.net. Notification by e-mail is also a great way to make updates to your contact information.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Help is always needed for planning, organizing and running the various club activities. Men & women of all ages are welcome – new talents & ideas are always appreciated! All parties are for adults unless otherwise noted.
The Club’s OPENING PARTY is scheduled for Sunday May 18th – 4pm. Come mix, meet & eat and enjoy some social tennis at the official opening party. Non-playing spouses welcome. Please contact Stacy Kasse (stacykasse@comcast.net) if you’d like to help. Details will be posted at the club, website & on emails closer to party date.
Dates for pizza/tennis parties and Ladies’ & Men’s nights will be announced during the season.

THANK YOU, GRACIAS, MERCI. . .
The Club has a number of volunteers that keep things efficient, looking good and running smoothly. We owe a special long standing thanks to Jim Evans for his expertise and love of gardening. The flowers and plantings are the result of Jim’s time and vision, along with some dedicated volunteers. When you walk through the new door into the clubhouse, please remember to thank Glenn Earl for spearheading and overseeing the installation – it’s an attractive addition to the grounds. Mark Forrester was instrumental in the acquisition of our ice machine last year – and Kerry Pittenger and Rod Norris are involved in other improvement projects. A special thanks to Brian & Linda Niles for their professional work on the website and its attractive new look this year. Even if we didn’t mention your name, many thanks to all who have contributed a little or a lot.
